Weight Loss for the Common Joe â It ainât no Secret!
Weight Loss for the Common Joe – It ain’t no Secret!
Ask Dr. Steve -
This is an open article addressing countless letters from everyday folks with a similar theme:
I’m not a gym rat or a nutritionist. I’m just a regular person who needs to lose
weight and tone up. What are some simple things that I can do to make a difference?
Dear Common “Joesâ€,
These are the facts about Weight Loss:
Mind Your Mind - You must be mentally prepared for the self-discipline of changing your habits of the past. I say habits because that is exactly what put you where you are right now.
Habits such as; eating mindlessly in front of the TV or computer (while on the Internet), sitting the majority of the day and not moving your body, eating poor choices of food and beverage products etc., etc., etc. You see over time they all became your modus operandi (your method of operation) for life.
You must make your choice to exchange those habits for new ones that give you the body and health you seek. This is not rocket science folks.
If you really want it to happen and prepare yourself mentally for the challenge (but most of all for the success) you will do it! Concentrate on each and every great benefit of the results and visualize those benefits several times each day.
Move Your Body – Your body (skeletal structure, nervous system, muscle structure etc.) was designed to MOVE! Rocks were designed to SIT! You are not a ROCK!!! Get up, take a walk and see this wondrous world that you live in.
Start by walking down the street and back. Then walk around the block. Then pick up the pace a bit and do it a little longer. Smile along the way (whistle if you can) and enjoy the miracle of dynamic engineering that you are.
Go bowling, play ping pong, shoot hoops, go hiking, climb a mountain etc. Find physical activities that you like to do and do at least one of them each and every day. Believe me. This will improve your mental health as well as your physical health.
Think Before You Put It Into Your Mouth – Your mouth is your gate and your brain is your gatekeeper. Here are some great things to put through that gate:
Water-Water-Water – Drink your weight times ounces of water each and every day. Example: I weigh 180lbs. so I drink 90 ounces of water a day (that’s about three quarts) It helps to curb your appetite and flush your system. When I say water, I mean water. Not coffee, tea, cola or beer. If you drink anything else it’s on top of those required ounces of water.
Fresh vegetables can be delicious but they are definitely nutritious. Make a fun mixed salad daily and change up the ingredients so you don’t get bored. Leaf Lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green onion, celery, green pepper, garbanzo beans, chopped hard-boiled egg etc. Add a little olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper for taste.
Lay off the pastas, breads, white rice and potatoes. I’m not saying to completely eliminate some of the starches that you like but you don’t need them every day and you certainly can limit the amount consumed to a cup or less.
These are some simple things for the common “Joe†to get started with. Do something, do anything, but do it NOW!
