(ii) Multi block home water filters- These filters are based on the combination techniques of carbon filtration, sub micron exchange and ion exchange. These filters are generally equipped with two staged filters. In the first stage, the most common contaminant, chlorine, is removed from the water and additionally the pH balance of water is enhanced.
In the second stage which is based on ion exchange, the harmful lead and copper ions are exchanged with the useful sodium and potassium ions. Additionally all other types of contaminants are also removed from the water.

Ans: Because it helps in understanding the benefits and limitations of a home water filter.

For instance, now that you know how RO based home water filters work, you can easily guess that contaminants like pharmaceutical drugs which are smaller in molecular size will not be blocked by the porous membrane and hence such contaminants will not be filtered by these units.

You can also observe the same thing for essential minerals present in the water. They are larger in size and hence they will be certainly separated out from the water. It is this water which is also known as de-mineralized and considered unsuitable for consumption.
